Park in Stafford to have £130k makeover

A park in Stafford is to have a facelift after senior councillors agreed to spending £130,000 on the project.

Yelverton Park in the Baswich area of the town will get new play facilities along with picnic benches, seating, and a new circular pathway around the park boundary.

The scheme will be funded through nearly £130,000 of developer’s money which Stafford Borough Council received as part of house building on the former police headquarters in the area.

The play facility which is off Yelverton Avenue was last refurbished in 1996.

A report to the borough council’s Cabinet on Thursday 7 March said that there was a small investment in the park more than 13 years ago, but the area “is in need of refurbishment and enhancement.”

Members of the Cabinet were asked to approve using the developer’s contribution towards enhancing the park. The senior councillors were told that the budget of £129,095 is enough to cover the costs of the work.

Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure at the council, said she was ‘delighted’ to present the report.

“This park is very popular with local people, especially the younger members of the community - but it is definitely in need of a refurbishment.

“The council has an excellent track record of delivering some great parks across the borough so I am really pleased work can now go ahead to improve yet another park,  which residents can continue to enjoy and be proud of, using the contribution we received as part of developments in the area.

Approval was also given to spend just over £21,000 to replace and repair safety surfaces within the play area, and provide a picnic bench, at Wildwood Park in Stafford.
