This day 9 years ago (23 April 2014), it was so good to meet and interview Iain Sutherland from The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver at our old Mount Street Studios. Iain has written many famous songs including Sailing, for a then 30 year old Rod Stewart, which became a world-wide hit reaching number one in the UK and the top five in more than a dozen other countries.
He performed the song with his brother Gavin as part of the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver collaboration. They also had a UK and international Top 10 hit with Arms of Mary in the summer of 1976. The Sutherland Brothers had initially released Sailing, but it did not make it into the Top 40.
The Sutherland Brothers were most successful in the 1970's releasing eight albums, six of them with Quiver, they had a few other minor hits before each going on to solo careers in the 1980's, when Iain returned to the Stoke on Trent area where he had his own recording studio.
Iain, who was 71 and originally from Ellon in Aberdeenshire, sadly died in 2019 following an illness. It was a real pleasure to meet and chat with him back in 2014.
